Arts Trail Returns

The EarlArts Trailsdon Arts Trail returns on Monday 2 May, as a part of Earlsdon Festival.  This year’s theme is ‘movement’ and the organisers are inviting proposals for artworks and projects to be included.

Artists who are interested in exhibiting work can find details and an application form on the Untitled Projects website.  It is not necessary to live in Earlsdon to apply.

 

Celebrate your 90th with the Lord Mayor

HM Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 90th birthday on 21 April and the Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Hammon, is inviting anyone who also has their 90th birthday during 2016 to a special party.

Councillor Hammon said: “It would be fantastic to celebrate HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday alongside other people in the city who are 90 this year. It’s always wonderful to meet citizens of Coventry, so I would like to invite anyone who celebrates their 90th birthday this year to join me for an afternoon of tea and music.”

The celebration will be held in the Coventry Transport Museum between 2pm and 4pm on 21 April, and will feature afternoon tea and musical entertainment from the Kaleidoscope Singers.

If you or someone you know reaches 90 in 2016 and would like to attend the party, you can request a pair of free tickets by e-mail or by calling 024 7683 3100.

Another alcohol licence sought

While the March ECHO was being printed, we learned that an application has been made for a licence to sell alcohol at 52b Earlsdon Street, known recently as Lickety Lick. The application is for a premises called The Generator Food and Drink and covers Alcohol, Entertainment and Late Night Refreshment, between 9am and midnight, seven days per week.

The deadline for public comments on the application is Thursday 17 March and they can be submitted to the Licensing Team or sent to Earlsdon councillor Allan Andrews for him to pass on.

Any objections to the licence application must be based around one (or more) of the licensing objectives:

  1. The prevention of crime and disorder;

  2. The protection of children from harm;

  3. The prevention of public nuisance; or

  4. The promotion of public safety.

The Charlatans

The Charlatans are set to headline the Godiva Festival’s Saturday Main Stage, with support from Mystery Jets. The festival, now in its 18th year, runs from 1-3 July in the War Memorial Park.

The Charlatans formed in 1989 and have enjoyed Top 40 chart success with all twelve of their studio albums, with three reaching the top of the album chart. The band’s career has also seen four top 10 hit singles: ‘One to Another’, ‘North Country Boy’, ‘How High’ and ‘The Only One I Know”. Their latest album release, ‘Modern Nature’. was critically acclaimed as one of their best ever and attracted a whole new fan base.

Lead singer Tim Burgess said: “We’re really looking forward to playing Godiva Festival. Coventry has always been a great place to play for us – I was listening to ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’ by the Velvet Underground when we were asked to play. It was a sign that it’s going to be a good night.”

Mystery Jets is an indie-rock band from Twickenham, London, perhaps best known for songs ‘Young Love’ and ‘Two Doors Down’. The group has released six studio albums, with their latest, ‘Curve of the Earth’, released during January 2016.

Stitched Together

The Pod, Time Union, & Food Union invite you to partake in a collaborative stitching project – Stitched Together.

The aim of the project is to create a large textile banner as used by Trade Unions and the Women’s Suffragette movement. The banner will be created using the themes of activism, collectivism, equality, justice, human rights all common themes that underpin/overarch the Pod, Food Union and Time Union.

Three Creative Gatherings will take place across the city – everyone is invited to join and stitch, share ideas, inspire curiosity, discuss possibilities, and be part of creating a professional banner – whilst stitching together individuals & communities.

Monday 29 February, 3pm-5pm @ Leigh Street Community Garden, Hillfields.
Wednesday 2 March, 11am-1pm @ Shop Front Theatre, City Arcade.
Friday 4 March, 10am-12pm @ Food Court, West Orchards.

The Stitched Together Banner will be launched on Monday 21 March as part of the Scratch the Surface Mental Health Arts Festival. It will subsequently be hung at the Pod but also used by the makers at events, processions, campaigns. The Textile Artist that has been commissioned for this Stitched Together Project is Julia O’Connell from Chapelfields.

Contributors have the opportunity to join Time Union, Coventry’s citywide time bank, and receive their time back in the form of time credits.

Your Opinions On Spencer Park Needed

I am a Coventry University student, studying Interior Design.

As part of my project I have been asked to produce a proposal for the pavilion located in Spencer Park, Coventry which will convince a funding organisation that it is worth investing in the project.

Approximately 2 years ago Coventry City Council decided the pavilion in Spencer Park was to close due to running costs. The Friends of Spencer Park have been campaigning for the pavilion and its facilities to reopen but the council still have no money for the up keep of the pavilion.

The Friends of Spencer Park are now searching for funding in order to refurbish the pavilion and reopen it. However to gain funding a proposal has to be put forward. This project will form the backbone of this proposal. Can you help by taking a few minutes to answer this quick survey?
