There’s a joint benefit gig at the Arches on Sunday 25 October, to raise funds for Diabetes UK and Zoe’s Place. The main act is skabilly/reggae duo the Targets and support comes from Sophie Corona.
Refugee crisis fundraiser
The Albany Club hosts a fundraising event from 8pm on Thursday 15 October, in support of those who are helping refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos.
The small island currently receives around 2000 refugees each day from neighbouring Turkey and local services are stretched beyond breaking point. A minimum of 2000 Euros a day is necessary to provide esswentials like food and water. There is an immediate and desperate need to buy clothing and tents and to pay for medical care, toilets and professional services like counselling and resettlement assistance.
Anyone who can make a contribution is urged to attend on the night but all donations will be gratefullY received by the club.
Speakers include Councillor Ed Ruane and there will be a live video link to the coordinator of the relief effort in the Lesbos town of Molyvos. Entertainment comes from local burning soul outfit the Baptists, with supporting DJs.

Community weed-pull and litter-pick
Saturday 10 October sees the annual Hearsall Earlsdon weed-pull and litter-pick.
The organisers say: “Don’t be shy, pitch in and help out! Meet your neighbours, have a laugh and brighten things up.”
Participants should meet up at 10am on the corner of Broomfield Road and Melbourne Road, when there will be a safety briefing.

Delivering Neighbourhoods Differently workshop
CJD Communities and Community Development Services, Coventry City Council and community specialist Carole Donnelly are supporting a workshop to explore ways to help the communities of Earlsdon and Chapelfields.
‘Delivering Neighbourhoods Differently’ will be held between 10am and 12noon on Saturday 17 October, at Earlsdon Primary School. Residents are invited to share ideas of what currently works well in their neighbourhood, what could work better or differently and how people could work together to help the community to grow.
The agenda for the morning is:

1. What do you love about your area?
2. What are the key assets in the ‘defined’ area?
3. Who are the key people/businesses in the area?
4. How would you like to develop an area plan and an alternative community solution?

Mooch grand re-opening
Mooch reopens at 10am tomorrow, Saturday 3 October.
The shop, at 46 Earlsdon Street, has been closed for several weeks and the proprietor, Claire, promises to reveal a major redecoration and some exciting new stock.

From ferries to pigsties
Coventry Cambrian Society is sorry to say that the talk planned for Friday 18 September on the history of the Beachy Aust Ferry (see A Ferry Story on page 13 of September’s ECHO) has been cancelled due to illness.
A replacement talk has been scheduled and Liz Pitman will give an illustrated talk on her book, Pigsties and Paradise: Lady Diarists and the Tour of Wales 1795 -1860, from 7.30pm at Beechwood Lawn Tennis Club.
